What is Workflow Automation?
Workflow automation refers to the use of software and technology to streamline, route and execute tasks and processes that would otherwise require substantial manual effort. According to one definition, it is “the approach to automating various business processes, tasks, and workflows with minimal human intervention.” In more detail:
It typically involves establishing triggers (an event occurs), conditions/rules (if this then that), and actions (task is routed or an update happens).
The goal is to reduce manual hand-offs, repetitive work, delays, errors and to improve consistency and visibility of how work flows through systems. Importantly, workflow automation is often distinguished from broader “business process automation” (BPA): workflow automation is more targeted at specific flows of tasks among people/systems, whereas BPA may encompass larger end-to-end processes across many functions.
